[eliteone quote]"
Perhaps it is the culture I was raised in but we don't "disrespect" one another by tossing vulgarities about. That is what the point of this is. Play the game have fun and don't let the language offend or ruin that fun. As for the game elements (had this chat on many games before) if it is in the game then the designers of that game intended for you to use it."
[end quote][Belladonna quote]"We don't enforce rules in order to be domineering or snobby, we at SFI just don't condone that kind of talk. We want our servers to be fit for children to play in. Considering both of my children play NOLF2, I have a personal interest in this."
"There is no excuse for swearing, it isn't an accident and it certainly isn't necessary.
Using vulgar language only shows you have no manners, no control of your emotions and a lack of intellect. Not sure what constitutes swearing? Anything that a priest, a pastor, your grandmother, your kindergarten teacher or your mom would be disappointed to hear coming out of your mouth is probably something you shouldn't say."
[end quote]As I stated before, I don't have a problem with following the server rules as long as I am aware of their existance. If I don't agree with them then I am free to find another server on which to play. However, statements such as the ones above(particularly the large bold type portions) are a bit alarming in my opinion and are themselves in my opinion, disrespectful. Not to say that the statement regarding "cultures" in fact says "My cultural level is higher than that of yours and I think you are somewhat incapable of respecting others" but I sort of feel that it gives that impression.
The other statement by Belladonna is even more so disturbing where anyone who uses any sort of profane lanquage or vulgarity(oops, my bad)"swearing, is in his opinion , stupid, mannerless and emotionally unstable. Where in he also states that he has children playing that game and does not want them subjected to that sort of lanquage, which is certainly understandable and I agree with that.
However, if his particular values are ones that, in my opinion, appear so judgemental and as I stated in a previous thread, "holier-than-thou" then I think I would be more concerned about what sort of example I was setting for my children than a concern about lanquage they may possibly be exposed to in an online game. It's a bit less complicated to explain away the bad examples set forth by others that you don't know than it is to explain away my own. And just so we all know, I am not making statements about anyones family members(as others have)this statement is about the individuals responsible for the above statements
Compliments of Encyclopedia Britannica Online:
swear·ing; Swear
: to use profane or obscene language : CURSE
cursed; curs·ing
: to use profanely insolent language against : BLASPHEME
blas·pheme; blas·phemed; blas·phem·ing
: to speak of or address with irreverence; : REVILE, ABUSE
re·vile; re·viled; re·vil·ing
transitive senses : to subject to verbal abuse
intransitive senses : to use abusive language
Need I go on? We start with one word which is swearing which not only refers to profanity but also abusive lanquage. In my opinion, I see abusive lanquage noted above.
My point:
These particular statements come across as a rather personal attack on the integrity of personal character's. I myself was not a member of TNT when servers were lent to our clan so I really can't speak to that effect other than everyone does favors for everyone and I'm sure that if SFI needed a favor of this clan and we were able to do it, then we would. Would it be acceptable to through up the doing of favors in order to persuade people to comply? Possibly. Is it nice? Um , in my opinion, no. When all else fails, then move on to the drastic.
I attempted to end this on a nicer note and for whatever reason, it has continued, which is OK since everyone is entitled to speak there mind. But know this, YES: The SFI server rules have been posted on our forums. YES: I have reviewed them(but I can only speak for myself) but I'm sure the majority of our members have reviewed them as well. YES: I will observer the server rules unless I prefer to be kicked. YES: I get your point. As for others..well, that's them.
In the words of Belladonna "There is no excuse for swearing, it isn't an accident and it certainly isn't necessary" except in this case we should replace swearing with "statements such as mine". Seeing as how Swearing, however short, is a statement. So, since his statement wasn't an accident and definately wasn't necessary and, I can see no excuse for it, so I have to conclude that he meant to say those things and meant those things he said. To which I truly take offense. How can you show respect to someone such as that?
P.S. Before you start using the "Someone think of the Children" speech think about what sort of example you set before you attack the character of others. We all want our own Children to learn positive things but attacking the character of someone you've never even met, know nothing about or spent any time with outside of a gaming environment, TRULY IS NOT A POSITIVE WAY OF THINKING NOR A POSITIVE EXAMPLE IN ANY WAY.
Thank you.
